What is
Broken key extraction means pulling the stuck piece of key out of the lock with thin tools made for the job. In many cases the lock works fine after. If the key broke because the lock was failing, we can repair or replace the lock.
When you need it
- A key broke off in your front door
- A key broke in your car door or ignition
- A key snapped in a padlock, gate, or mailbox lock
- A key is stuck and will not come out
While you wait
- Do not push the broken piece deeper
- Do not use glue or super glue to pull it out
- Do not spray the lock full of oil
- Keep the other half of the key. We may be able to cut a new key from it.

Common questions
Can I pull it out with tweezers?
You can try once, gently. Most of the time it pushes the piece deeper and makes it harder to remove.
Will my lock still work?
Usually, yes. If the lock was damaged, we tell you and give you options before we do more work.
Can you make a new key from the broken one?
Often, yes, if you have both pieces. Keep them.
